The engagement reaffirmed the importance of strong and sustained institutional cooperation in safeguarding the integrity, stability and resilience of Mauritius’ financial system.

The meeting provided an opportunity to reinforce the shared commitment of both institutions to working hand in hand in strengthening Mauritius’ framework for combatting money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing (ML/TF/PF), while supporting a sound, transparent and resilient financial sector.

In today’s increasingly interconnected financial environment, financial crime risks continue to evolve in complexity and sophistication. Effective cooperation between competent authorities, timely information-sharing, sound risk assessment and coordinated responses are therefore more important than ever.

The banking sector remains a fundamental pillar of Mauritius’ economy and financial architecture. Maintaining a banking sector that is safe, sound, well-regulated and resilient to financial crime risks is essential to preserving confidence in the financial system. Banks and other financial institutions play a critical role in identifying suspicious financial activity, applying robust customer due diligence and transaction-monitoring measures, and reporting relevant information to the competent authorities.

The FIU and the Bank of Mauritius recognise that protecting Mauritius’ financial system is a shared responsibility. Continued collaboration between the two institutions is essential to enhancing the effective use of financial intelligence, strengthening preventive measures and responding to emerging financial crime threats.

Both institutions remain committed to working closely with all relevant stakeholders to prevent, detect and disrupt illicit financial flows. Such collaboration contributes to the effectiveness of Mauritius’ AML/CFT framework and reinforces the country’s standing as a trusted, responsible and well-regulated international financial centre.

Through stronger cooperation, greater vigilance and a shared commitment to integrity, Mauritius can continue to strengthen the resilience of its financial system and protect it against evolving financial crime threats.

The Acting Director of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Mr Kiran Bhoyroo, met with Dr Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor, Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, on Friday, 7 August 2026.
