29th Egmont Group Plenary, July 3 -7 2023

Ms. Carine Charlette, Director of FIU Mauritius, Vice Chair of IEWG and President of ARINSA, and three other FIU officers attended the 29th Egmont plenary meeting which was held from 03-07 July 2023, in Abu Dhabi. FIU Mauritius contributed significantly to the discussions on challenges and opportunities present in the global fight against money laundering and terrorism financing.

During the Egmont Group Plenary, several Working Group meetings took place, including Information Exchange (IEWG), Membership, Support, and Compliance (MSCWG), Policy and Procedures (PPWG), and Technical Assistance and Training (TATWG). Ms. Carine Charlette as Vice- Chair of IEWG group played a vital role on raising awareness about the new trends and typologies in abuse of NPOs for Terrorism Financing purpose. She highlighted the importance of the use of advanced IT technologies by FIUs to enhance their operations to support the 2022-2027 EG Strategic Plan’s vision.

Moreover, a specialised training was carried out by UNODC experts for FIU analysts on use of open source tools for virtual assets investigations.

The FIU Mauritius team also participated in the Regional meeting held between FIUs in the ESAAMLG region to discuss the importance of investing in sophisticated IT tools by FIUs, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) which have been developed and used by some FIUs to assess risk of STRs, analyse big financial data and prepare intelligence package for dissemination. Integrating these AI tools and systems within our local FIUwould undoubtedly assist us in our operations and create an innovative and highly-productive FIU.
