Strengthening Regional Efforts Against Financial Crimes: FIU Mauritius Participates in AML and CFT Workshop

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Mauritius recently participated in a workshop on Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter-Terrorism Financing (CTF), 7 to 11 October 2024 at the Integrated Customs Clearance Centre in Plaine Magnien. This initiative aimed to bolster the capabilities of FIUs and World Customs Organization (WCO) member states in the Eastern and Southern African region.

During the workshop, Ms. Carine Charlette, the Director of FIU Mauritius, emphasized the crucial need for collaboration among enforcement agencies. Drawing from her extensive experience in addressing financial crimes, she highlighted the importance of a unified approach against money laundering and she underscored the critical role of partnerships between organizations such as the WCO, Financial Action Task Force (FATF), and INTERPOL in enhancing collaborative efforts to tackle AML and CTF challenges.

In addition to the workshop discussions, Mauritius had recently enacted legislative measures to strengthen its national framework against financial crime, aligning with FATF recommendations. Looking ahead, the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) region committed to prioritizing AML-CTF strategies as part of its Strategic Plan for 2025-2028. The FIU Mauritius is set to play a proactive role in identifying high-risk areas for illicit financial activities. The FIU expressed gratitude to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) and the WCO for their efforts in organizing this important workshop.
